Die vorerwähnten Arbeiten wurden in der Regel handwerksmäßig betrieben, und dies ist auch der Grund, weshalb in keinem Buch auch nur einigermaßen brauchbare Zeichnungen oder Skizzen über die Einzelheiten der Takelung enthalten waren.
Dies hatte sich um die Jahrhundertwende, als die Segelschiffe immer größer wurden, geändert, und vor diesem Hintergund entstand dieses Buch. Autor conflict der damalige Direktor des Germanischen Lloyds, Friedrich Ludwig Middendorf, ein ausgewiesener Fachmann auf dem Gebiet des Schiffbaus. Große Segelschiffe waren sein Steckenpferd. Mit dem Buch verfolgte er akribisch den Zweck, die Literatur über die Bemastung und Takelung der Schiffe citadel zu führen und dem Schiffbauer jener Tage alle erforderlichen Informationen in gebündelter shape an die Hand zu geben, die er braucht. Heute stellt das Werk eine einzigartige Informationsquelle über die Segelschiffahrt vergangener Tage dar, die weit über technische Aspekte hinaus geht.
Im ersten Teil des Buches finden sich die allgemeinen theoretischen Grundlagen, die zum selbständigen Entwerfen von Segelzeichnungen erforderlich sind.
Im zweiten Teil sind von den verschiedensten Segel- und Dampfschiffstakelungen, die gegenwärtig bei deutschen Schiffen vorkommen, Abbildungen und Anleitungen zur Berechnung der Größe der einzelnen Teile der Bemastung gegeben. Die Berechnungen sind möglichst übersichtlich gehalten, so dass sich auch der Anfänger leicht darin zurechtfinden kann.
Im dritten Teil dieses Buches werden die verschiedenartigsten Beschläge, Blöcke and so on. durch Zeichnungen und Skizzen dargestellt, die paintings ihrer Beanspruchung zu erörtert und Tabellen oder Formeln über die Abmessungen gegeben.
Ergänzt wird das Werk durch umfangreiche Detailzeichnungen und Riggpläne.
